AlSi10Mg is an aluminium-based alloy widely used for functional parts as well as prototypes. It offers good corrosion resistance, good electrical conductivity, high dynamic toughness, excellent thermal conductivity.
Conventionally cast parts in this type of aluminium alloy are often heat-treated to improve the mechanical properties, for example, applying the T6 cycle of solution annealing, quenching and age hardening. The SLM / DMLS process is characterised by extremely rapid melting and solidification: this enables mechanical properties in the as-built condition similar to T6 heat-treated cast parts.
Due to its high strength-to-weight ratio, AlSi10Mg is a good choice for automotive, aerospace and automation applications, notably gearboxes, engine parts, ductwork, heat exchangers, high-pressure pipes, manifolds, housings and brackets subject to high loading.
Parts can be machined, spark-eroded, welded, micro shot-peened, polished and coated.
